Director of Clinical Applications

Position Summary:

At the direction of the CIO, the Director, Clinical Systems assists the Information Systems department in planning, designing, implementing and on-going support of the clinical information systems.  The Director will ensure that all new and existing clinical information systems are used appropriately, establish technical and quality standards and the information needs of clinicians are met.  This leader will facilitate the developing and monitoring of the installation schedules for new clinical applications and for application release upgrades for all facilities. This will include management of project budgets and outside vendor responsibilities. Prioritization of work efforts, between facilities, applications, vendors, and consultants will be critical to success. It will also be important for this position to develop good working relationships with each local facility, corporate, regional, divisional and departmental directors.

Responsible for providing leadership, clinical expertise and support to the planning, coordination and implementation of clinical documentation projects in accordance with strategic business objectives. Individual will facilitate communication between executive leadership, the physician community, nursing leadership and IT to ensure that the needs of the system are met and the project timelines, milestones and deliverable are on target with the overall information system strategic plan.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serves as liaison between information systems, the physician community and nursing for the design, build, testing and implementation of clinical IT systems
  • Develops and manages the project activities for clinical tasks relating to projects; identifies timelines, deliverables, milestones and appropriately escalates issues that may compromise project timelines, goals or budget
  • Meets with nursing leadership to identify and discuss performance improvement opportunities to be addressed through clinical information systems
  • Provides ongoing support for application systems modifications or upgrades and assists with the deployment of additional system features
  • Project oversight for project management and implementation of clinical IT projects
  • Ensures knowledge replication of Clinical IT Systems amongst team members

Skill or Experience Requirements:

Experience with McKesson Horizon Clinical systems is preferred. Minimum of three years of acute care clinical nursing experience.  Minimum of five years related management experience required. Accomplished team-orientated leader with demonstrated achievements in implementing clinical information systems projects in a complex multi facility healthcare organization. Must possess strong skills in project management, business and clinical process redesign, written/verbal communication, physician relations, and customer satisfaction. Must be a skilled decision-maker that works proactively in a high stress environment.

Education or Specific Traning Requirements:

Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Informatics, Nursing, Healthcare Information Systems, or related field. BSN preferred.
