Close to 42,000 healthcare tech professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world converged on Las Vegas last week to attend the annual HIMSS Conference. The emids booth provided a spot for attendees to rest and recharge with energy shots and comfortable, powered seating that allowed visitors to charge up their devices.

Highlights From HIMSS16

With more than 300 educational sessions and three floors of exhibits featuring more than 1,300 vendors, there was a lot to take in, and several highlights. More than 100,000 tweets went out related to #HIMSS16 during the week of the event from over 18,000 Twitter users, averaging more than a thousand tweets per hour.

Acting CMS Administrator Andy Slavitt and National Coordinator Karen DeSalvo, MD, discussed the current state of healthcare in a co-presentation. Health IT has made great strides over the past five years, they said, pointing to the adoption of EHRs as an example, but emphasized that there is much work to be done. Interoperability and data sharing is a particular area of concern.

As keynote speaker, Peyton Manning discussed leadership and player safety in the NFL. He waited a few days to announce his retirement from the game, but sat down with Dr. Robert Heyer, team physician for the Carolina Panthers and president of the NFL Physicians Society, to chat some about the NFL’s own electronic health records system, among other items.
